Wolf of the Wolds.

Why a Wolf?

The beautiful valley of the Yorkshire Wolds, was once infested with wolves and up until the 18th century there was still a bounty for killing them.

They would prey on and attack travellers, which resulted in a hostel being granted near Staxton Hill by King Athelstan in AD 937 called Spital Ho, with the purpose of giving shelter to travellers to help protect them against the many wolves that roamed. The Saxon word for January is Wolf-monath which is when wolf attacks used to be at the highest. The Yorkshire Wolds had one of the densest wolf populations in the UK and was also one the last places in England to still have wolves.
